Abstract


Predictive Power of Parents’ Self-Esteem, Basic Needs and Self-Efficacy on 5-6 Years Old Children’s Social Emotional Adjustment
This study was conducted in order to find out the relationships between 5-6 year old children’s social emotional adjustment level and their parents’ self-esteem, basic needs and self-efficacy. Relational screening model was utilized and the study group of the research consisted of 208 5-6 year old children attending preschool education and their parents (208 mothers and 208 fathers). At the end of the study it was found that there was a positive significant correlation between children’s social competence level and parents’ self-esteem and basic needs (survival, power, having fun, attachment, freedom), there was a negative significant correlation between children’s anger-aggressiveness level and parents’ self-esteem, self-efficacy and basic need of survival, and there was a negative significant correlation between anxiety-introversion level of children and parents’ self-esteem, self-efficacy, power, basic needs of attachment total scores. Results also indicated that self-esteem, basic needs and self-efficacy altogether predicted 16 % of social competency, 17 % of anger-aggressiveness and 24 % of anxiety-introversion subtests of social emotional adjustment. In the study implications of the findings were discussed and suggestions were given for parents and educators.
