Abstract


Teachers’ Viewpoints on Using Current Events to Teach Topics Related to Economy and Sustainable Development in Social Studies
This study aims to identify teachers’ viewpoints on how and for which aims current events could be used to teach topics related to economy and sustainable development in social studies. One of the educational approaches adopted in the current current social studies curriculum, social studies as social sciences, foresees the development of students’ understanding and comprehension of social sciences by means of introducing them a combined and integrated version of knowledge selected from the contents of various social science disciplines. Economy is one of those social sciences. In order to develop students’ awareness and sensitivity of economical dimensions of their daily lives, the curriculum aims to teach particular topics, including sustainable development. Social studies education also proposes to provide students with the awareness and sensitivity towards the events occurring in their immediate environments by utilising current events. Adapting a qualitative approach, this study utilises a semi-structured interview protocol to reveal teachers’ experiences and viewpoints. The study group is formed from 13 social studies teachers working in various public middle schools in Aydın and Uşak provinces. The findings reveal that social studies teachers give importance to topics on economy and sustainable development and try to utilise current events in their teaching practices. They also suggest that the place of the mentioned topics in the curriculum should be broadened.
