Abstract


Attitudes Toward Statistics Scale: Validity and Reliability Study
The aim of the current study was to develop a Statistics Attitude Scale with high reliability and validity levels specifically in order to determine the statistics attitude of university students in social sciences. The data was collected in Pamukkale University, Faculty of Education, in various departments such as: Social Sciences Education, Science Education, Mathematics Education, Computer Education and Instructional Technology, Psychological Counseling and Guidance Departments from randomly selected a total of 450 university students: 296 female (65,8 % of the participants) and 154 male (34,2% of the participants) participants. The scale is a 9- point- Likert- type scale with level of agreement varying from “I definitely do not agree” (1) to “I definitely agree” (9). Explorer factor analysis was conducted for scale validity purposes. As the result of the Explorer factor analysis the scale consisted of five sub-dimensions:the first sub-dimension: the Relation of Statistics and Professional Life (7 items), the second sub-dimension: Statistical Anxiety-Fear (9 items), the third sub-dimension: Enjoying Statistics (6 items), fourth sub-dimension: the Importance of Statistics (6 items), and the fifth sub-dimension: Statistical Difficulty Perception(4 items).Cronbach Alpha coefficient was calculated as 0.927 for internal reliability indicating the scale has a very high degree of internal reliability.In essence, the Statistics Attitude Scale has both high levels of validity and internal reliability.
