In this paper, we have aimed to investigate how the concepts the students aquire in the basic physics courses throughout their education contribute to the formation of the new concepts they need to learn in their Electromagnetic Theory course at university. The structural teaching technique requires educators to determine how students have formed their preconceptions so that they can form the new concepts accurately. For this purpose, in the first part of the research, an open-ended written test consisting of one question related to direct and alternative current was conducted among 97 students who have recently registered to Marmara University Atatürk Education Faculty, Department of Physics Education. In the second part of the research, semi-structured group interviews were given to a study group of 20 volunteer students. The interviews were recorded on video and then transcripts were made. The results were evaluated through qualitative analysis. In the first part of the study, the students’ answers were coded based on their reasoning, while in the second part the students were asked to elaborate on their coded answers so that a detailed analysis could be made. At the end of the research, the university students’ misconceptions about current and generating electromagnetic wave have been identified.
