Abstract


ENGLISH TEACHERS’ VIEWS OF THE NATURE AND PURPOSE OF PRIMARY SCIENCE EDUCATION
The National Curriculum in England and Wales, as a result of the 1988 Educational Reform Act, has made the notion of science education is much more significant than previously. Primary school pupils must now have opportunities to work scientifically and develop appropriate skills and processes. The purpose of the study is to explore primary school teachers’ views of the nature and purpose of science education. The participants of the study were 27 teachers who were at an INSET course that aimed to develop their theoretical and practical understanding of science education. An open-ended questionnaire was used in the study. The results show, among others, that science education helps children develop essential basic skills by which they can have a better understanding of life and the world around them.
